Associate or Full Professor, tenured or tenure earning track candidates will be considered. Responsibilities include a senior leadership role in the College and an adjunct appointment with the University of Alabama School of Medicine. As chair of FIRM , the successful candidate will report directly to the Dean of CCHS and have ultimate oversight of a fully accredited residency program in Family Medicine (The University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency), Family Medicine fellowship programs, a Family Medicine Clerkship, rural pipeline programs, supporting ambulatory and hospitalist patient care programs, and activities in collaboration with the division faculty leadership. Additional responsibilities include fiscal management of FIRM , faculty recruitment, retention and development, and providing appropriate resources to support and advance the department's education and research initiatives. FIRM includes 43 Family Medicine and Internal Medicine physician faculty and a core interdisciplinary faculty of 50 others in the specialties of OB/ GYN , Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Psychology, Surgery, Neurology, Social Work, Education, Library Science, Clinical Pharmacy, Nursing, Nutrition, and Population Health - all dedicated to family medicine residency and fellowship education, the general professional education of medical students in our newly accredited Primary Care Track that features a third-year longitudinal curriculum, and the research and scholarship of primary care and community-based population health. COLLEGE OF COMMUNITY HEALTH SCIENCES : The College of Community Health Sciences was founded in 1972 by William Willard, MD, author of the "Willard Report" and considered the "Father of Family Medicine," with a mandate to train family physicians for Alabama, particularly its rural areas. The College is one of 12 colleges and schools of The University of Alabama, the 38,(see application details) Tuscaloosa flagship campus of the UA System. The College also provides medical student education as the Tuscaloosa Regional Campus of the four-campus University of Alabama School of Medicine, based at UAB in Birmingham. The College's mission focuses on improving the health of individuals and communities in Alabama and the region through leadership in medical education and primary care; the provision of high-quality, accessible health care services; and scholarship. PROGRAMS : The College is sponsor of the UA Family Medicine Residency and seven fellowships for family physicians. The Residency, a 16-16-16 program now in its 45th year, is the second largest family medicine residency in the country. Of the more than 470 Residency graduates, 85% practice in the five-state area of the Southeast, with half in rural areas, and comprise 1 of 7 family physicians practicing in Alabama. Nearly 900 medical students have completed their clinical training at the College since 1974, entering Family Medicine and primary care careers at more than twice the national average. The College's nationally recognized Rural Pipeline Programs and the Institute for Rural Health Research, along with basic sciences, social sciences, and health professional faculty and resources on the UA campus and innumerable specialty and medical research faculty among the School of Medicine faculty, create a uniquely resource-rich environment for a medical educator. The College's clinical enterprise conducts 80,000 ambulatory visits and more than 10,000 admissions a year to a broad patient population, including UA faculty and staff and the general population of West Alabama. Tuscaloosa is a vibrant university town of approximately 100,000 with entertainment, cultural and educational opportunities, and is centrally accessible to many recreational and visitor opportunities in the Southeast. POSITION : Candidates must hold an MD or DO degree, current DEA certificate, current (or eligibility for) Alabama licensure, be board certified in candidate's specialty. Strong preference will be offered to family medicine candidates with at least five years of experience in a clinical and academic medicine leadership role. The ideal candidate will have experience in LCME and ACGME requirements, developing clinical practice plans, engagement in scholarly activities, and fostering collaborative working relationships with colleagues and community partners.
