Field Composition and rhetoric, Film and media studies

The English Department at the University of Tennessee seeks candidates whose primary interest is in teaching and scholarship on film. Our ideal applicant will be able to teach cross-listed courses in our Cinema Studies program, including Introduction to Film Studies, as well as intermediate and/or advanced courses. Applicants with expertise in one or more of the following: global film histories, industries, and cultures, postcolonial filmmaking, Black diasporic and Indigenous film cultures, early cinema, and film theoretical and intersectional approaches on race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have a PhD in English, Cinema Studies, or a directly related field in hand by the time of appointment and provide evidence of excellence in film pedagogy.

Lecturers teach 12 hours per semester. The position, pending funding, is housed in English and is a non-tenure-track, renewable yearly with a salary of $45,000, plus health and retirement benefits, and a generous travel allowance. In addition, it includes opportunities for annual merit raises, promotion and longer contracts, and occasional summer courses for supplemental pay. Although not required as part of the job duties, the campus offers a variety of resources for professional development, community engagement, service, scholarship, and creative projects.

UT Knoxville is the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee system and a Carnegie doctoral research extensive university with over 21,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students from over 100 countries. Knoxville has a vibrant arts scene, a lively downtown, affordable housing, and is home to significant companies in the film and television industry (Discovery Communications, Regal Cinemas, etc.). Less than an hours drive to the Great Smoky Mountains, the city is also home to 1000 acres of urban wilderness, the Knoxville Museum of Art, and Big Ears, the acclaimed avant-garde festival of film, music, and art.
