Position:Chief of Police

A national search is underway to attract the next Chief of
Police to lead the Akron Police Department (APD) in Akron, Ohio,
with the highest levels of professionalism, integrity,
transparency, and accountability. The Chief of Police will oversee
APD and its 451 sworn officers and 30 FTE professional support
staff for a total allocation of 481. The Department is funded with
an annual budget of over $71 million. The Chief is expected to lead
with integrity, have exceptional communication skills, and work
closely with and under the guidance of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor
of Public Safety. The Chief will also serve as the primary
spokesperson to the public and the media, with communications
support from the police PIO and the Mayors Office.
A minimum of ten years of command or management experience in
law-enforcement with at least two years equivalent to Deputy Chief
or above is required. Candidates should have experience working
with Police Unions, developing and utilizing key performance
indicators, and building diverse workforces. Graduation from a
police leadership development program is desired. Bachelors degree
preferred. Masters degree a plus.
The selected candidate will be required to successfully complete
all Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy certification requirements
within the first year of employment. Peace officers from other
states may be eligible for reciprocity/credit for previous training
that can be applied to Ohios peace officer requirements. Upon hire,
residency within the corporate limits of the City of Akron is
highly desired but not required.
