The Project Engineer will support Ameresco's growing energy storage project pipeline within the Federal Solutions business unit. You will work collaboratively with Ameresco Federal team members, leading energy storage equipment providers, and Federal government customers to develop and implement energy storage solutions. In addition to the focus on energy storage, the Project Engineer will support development efforts related to renewable energy, cogeneration, microgrid controls, and energy efficiency projects as needed. This is a unique opportunity to develop expertise in the quickly growing energy storage industry while developing broad experience as a renewable energy engineer. Day to day work will include evaluating new energy storage and microgrid project opportunities, developing technical and economic proposals, building upon existing energy and cost savings models, designing system architecture for energy storage systems within Energy Savings Performance Contracted (ESPC) projects, managing interconnection processes, and contributing to technical writing responses for energy storage measures. The Project Engineer will also participate in innovate research and development projects to advance the state of the art of energy storage and microgrid technologies while contributing to Ameresco's energy storage body of knowledge and Center of Expertise within the organization. The ideal candidate will have strong technical data analysis and technical writing skills, electrical engineering experience, knowledge of electric distribution systems, protections and controls, will be self-motivated, comfortable communicating frequently with internal and external stakeholders, capable of working both collaboratively and independently, and have the ability and initiative to learn technical and new subjects quickly. Responsibilities: Lead and support project development efforts for energy storage and microgrid projects with US Federal Government agencies, gathering relevant project information and data, conducting engineering analysis to design system architecture and calculating project cost, savings and revenue opportunity; Use Excel and Python based software tools to perform technical and economic modeling of energy storage systems to design energy storage systems utilized for customer utility bill savings, energy market participation and resiliency; Evaluate and vet new energy storage project opportunities to determine which opportunities are worth pursuing based on technical, economic, market and project screening criteria; Develop and vet technical, economic, and regulatory screening criteria for assessment of energy storage opportunities; Help identify innovative opportunities for energy storage deployment, such as via new technologies or pursuit of new markets with strong economic drivers for energy storage; Support project development needs pertaining to renewable energy, cogeneration, microgrid controls, and energy efficiency measures; Support Electrical Engineers with Interconnect Application processes for energy storage and distributed generation systems; Identify registration and application requirements for participation in Ancillary Services and Energy Markets; Identify other grant and subsidy programs available from Utilities, Independent System Operators (ISOs), State and Federal Government and other sources; Lead bid processes of energy storage system procurement by developing scopes of work, issuing requests for bids from energy storage vendors, and selecting technologies and vendors for project proposal; Contribute to technical writing of project proposals and responses to industry RFIs and RFPs; Support activity related to construction, operation and maintenance of energy storage systems as needed; Perform other duties as required. Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline from a four-year accredited college or university. Minimum 3 years of prior experience in an engineering or project development role. Demonstrated understanding of current engineering principles associated with analysis of power systems, electrical interconnection, battery energy storage systems, microgrid controls, data monitoring/reporting systems. Advanced experience with Microsoft Excel required. Preferred Requirements: Prior experience working directly with one or more technologies including energy storage, smart grid, electric distribution, protection and controls systems, or renewable energy. Ability to evaluate electrical drawings and specifications. Experience with data analysis and/or programming (Visual Basic MatLAB, Python) Detail oriented with ability to work collaboratively with team members nearby and remotely, managing multiple tasks simultaneously Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills. Some travel required to meet project requirements. Will be required to pass security clearance investigation. Will be required to remain in compliance with Ameresco drug testing program.
