Summary

This position is located in the Textile Care (Laundry) department of Environmental Management Service. The incumbent performs duties relating to the processing of textiles and contributes in the processing of linens for patient care areas within the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center, and two other VA Medical Centers located in the state of Alabama, Birmingham and Central Alabama (Montgomery and Tuskegee Campuses).

Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

* Incumbent pulls clean wet linens, uniforms, and clothing from the six pass through washer/extractors. * After unloading items from washers, he/she then decides which rails (flatwork or dryer) items should be hung on using monorail lift. * No other duties are required on washer/extractors with the exception of unloading. * He/she uses electric, air and hydraulic controls to tilt dryers, set cycles, raise and lower slings of wet and dry linens to insure proper workflow to finishing areas. * Loads and unloads two 400 lb. gas dryers and two 110 lb. steam dryers. * Uses overhead rail slings and carts for loading, unloading, and movement of linens in various stages of processing to finishing areas. * Selects proper temperature and drying cycle for various fabrics. * Coordinates workflow with the washperson to ensure maximum use of dryers. This is accomplished by selecting proper types of linens to maintain adequate quantities and classifications to the finishing textile areas. * Verifies laundry lists and identification of items against items received. Unidentified items will be marked and effective control measures applied to insure timely return of clothing to proper party. * Cleans and maintains worksite and equipment using air hoses, brushes, brooms -and central vacuum units. * Duties include regular cleaning of both internal and external lint collectors, the removal of lint accumulation from fans, basket rails, intake screens, compartments, etc., as often as necessary, which requires working from steps and ladders. * Lock-Out/Tag-Out Procedures are to be utilized during cleaning. * In the absence of higher-grade machine operators, will be required to perform washroom duties and operate washer/extractors consistent with their various load characteristics. * Performs other laundry tasks during slack periods or periods of leave by other employees. * Performs other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Continuous standing, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, heavy pulling, and heavy lifting loads in excess of 50 pounds is required to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position. Very heavy physical effort is required to pull wet, dry linens in both carts and slings weighing in excess of 100 pounds out of the washer extractors for processing in the flatwork or drying areas.

Working Conditions: Most work is accomplished inside a building in a hot, humid noisy environment, is exposed to the possibility of bruises, unpleasant odors, soiled and wet textiles, lint and wet floors. Temperatures in the work area may vary from extreme heat in summer to cold drafts in winter. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals.
