Job Summary: The Materials Characterization Specialist is
responsible for the advanced operation, specialized training, and
interpretation of data from the assigned instruments within the
facility. These instruments include electron microscopes, focused
ion beam microscopes, X-ray diffractometers, and similarly related
instruments and ancillary specimen preparation equipment.
Additional Department Summary: The Materials Characterization
Specialist is responsible for application and development of in
situ instrumentation, diffraction and scattering methods,
spectroscopy, and related analytical methods that advance the
capabilities of facility instruments and their user base.
Interprets collected data. Explores and trains new analytical
techniques and methods. Documents procedures for the use by others.
Engages users in assisting or completing characterization
tasks.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher and
two (2) years of experience in a research laboratory.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in maintenance and training of
individuals in the advanced operation of characterization tools.
Experience in scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron
microscopy, and related electron microscopy. Experience in focus
ion beam microscopy methods. Experience in atom probe tomography
(APT). Experience in X-ray diffractometers and/or similar
instrumentation.
