Job Summary: The Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the PhD or other doctoral degree under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee.

Additional Department Summary: The Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering Department at The University of Alabama is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral position for research. This position is funded by NOAA through the Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH; https://news.ua.edu/2022/04/ua-awarded-360-million-to-lead-national-water-effort/). The successful candidate will have a one-year appointment (with the potential to be extended) with the Center for Complex Hydrosystems Research and Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alabama.

Conducts innovative and applied research on nature-based solutions for compound flood impact mitigation using coupled hydrologic-hydrodynamic models and probabilistic methods. Uses computational modeling, operations research, and a wide range of in-situ and remotely-sensed data, analytical and statistical tools/methods to characterize and quantify the extent to which coastal features contribute to the resilience of coastal communities and infrastructure against compounding effects of coastal hydroclimate hazards. Participates in the integration of distributed hydrologic models (i.e. NWM) with a detailed hydrodynamics model of select estuaries and estimate the risk that hydroclimate forcings and anthropogenic effects pose on coastal communities. Leads and contributes in writing scientific papers, technical reports and present research results, and assist in developing proposals for external funding.

The College and/or the Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering Department will establish a series of structured merit-based evaluations. Initial appointments are for one year, with renewal contingent upon demonstration of research productivity

Required Minimum Qualifications: Doctorate. Additional qualifications based on assignment.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or other terminal degree in Civil, Environmental, or Coastal Engineering.

Candidates will need to have completed their PhD or have it completed by the start of employment. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with parallel computing, and active involvement in coastal risk and resilience assessment projects. Experience in hydrodynamic modeling (e.g., MIKE, DFLOW-FM, ADCIRC), process-based and biological model coupling, and model calibration and validation. Background in statistical analysis and machine learning.

Background Investigation Statement: Prior to hiring, the final candidate(s) must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation and information obtained from social media and other internet sources. A prior conviction reported as a result of the background investigation DOES NOT automatically disqualify a candidate from consideration for this position.
