THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA LIBRARIES Associate Dean for Research & User Services The University of Alabama seeks an experienced strategic thinkerto join the University Libraries administrative team. The candidatewill report to the Dean of University Libraries and will be amember of the University Libraries Executive Committee. Theideal candidate will be an innovative leader with a sense ofevolving trends in research libraries, particularly in instruction,library liaison programs, access services, collections managementand use, outreach efforts, and user services in general. Developing opportunities to create and promote student success andsupport faculty teaching and research are vital components of thisposition's leadership. The Associate Dean will work closelywith librarians to facilitate a shared vision and commitment to thestrategic plan for the University Libraries and the Universityof Alabama.-- The Associate Dean will lead and coordinateprogrammatic services for undergraduate and graduate education,instruction, and research support. This position will workcollaboratively with librarians and stakeholders across theinstitution toaddress and support scholarly, research, and teaching needs. The Associate Dean has programmatic, strategic, budgetary,managerial, and operational responsibilities for Gorgas InformationServices, Gorgas Access Services, the Annex, and Branch LibraryServices. The Associate Dean will lead and oversee the UniversityLibraries Liaison program. The incumbent will lead a group ofdedicated faculty and staff that provides excellent services andlearning experiences, provides access to comprehensive scholarlyinformation resources that support curricula and the researchlifecycle, and provide training and technology to supportinnovation and entrepreneurial endeavors. The incumbent will enablea culture of assessment, continuous improvement, andaccountability. The candidate will be open to diverse voices andperspectives in the University Libraries and on campus. Theincumbent will evaluate and hire faculty and staff in the assignedareas.-- REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in Library & Information Sciences from anALA-accredited institution. At least 5 years of significant management experience in anacademic library or related academic setting. Demonstrated progression of increased responsibility andrelevant professional work experience. Strong leadership skills, including the ability to leadcollaborative organizational change and inspire innovation. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated engagement in areas associated with the jobportfolio. Experience in personnel development and management. Experience with various levels of outreach for students andfaculty. Demonstrated experience with strategic planning. Strong commitment to user experience and instruction.Understanding of teaching and learning practices in highereducation. Experience with development and management of collections andresources. Experience with Integrated Library Systems modules. Experience with reporting tools and generation of high-levelreports. Experience with Interlibrary Loan software such as RapidILL,ILLIAD, and Reprints Desk. Experience with assessment methods that demonstrate the value oflibraries to the institutional mission, as well as a commitment tocontinuous improvement. Experience with the implementation of emerging trends in highereducation. Experience applying different technologies to support teachingand learning. Evidence working collaboratively and creatively in a leadershiprole. Experience developing library policy, articulating vision, andproviding leadership and direction toward achieving strategicgoals. Strong comfort with creative ambiguity. Evidence of potential for research, peer-reviewed publication,and service to support faculty rank. Evidence of a record of service to the profession to representthe University Libraries at the national level. Commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse workenvironment. Responsibilities change as the University Libraries continue toevolves -- PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Doctoral or additional advanced degree. Experience leading and developing complex collaborativeprojects. Experience working in a research library.
