Pay Grade/Pay Range: $28.69/Hour

Department/Organization: 504104 - Plumbing Maintenance

Normal Work Schedule: M - F 7:30am to 4:00pm - May require shift work or weekend work.

Job Summary: This position performs skilled work at the journeyman level in the heating, plumbing, mechanical piping and structural steel trades. Work consists of the fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of heating, plumbing, mechanical piping systems, structural steel, package boiler equipment and water treatment, kitchen equipment, auxiliary equipment, steam, water, gas systems and other building mechanical equipment; auxiliary equipment, steam, water, sewers both sanitary and storm, irrigation systems gas and air systems and other building mechanical equipment; above and underground steam, domestic water, HVAC (chilled and hot water), sanitary and storm distribution systems; firing, tending and maintaining pressure boilers to supply heat for buildings and domestic hot water. Makes limited estimates from on-site inspections. May provide work leadership to other trades personnel. Must drive from site to site.

Required Minimum Qualifications: A high school diploma or GED and a minimum of four (4) years experience in one of the following trades: plumbing, pipefitting, structural steel (iron worker), boilermaker, millwright, boiler tender, steamfitter, or sprinkler fitter OR completion of an approved apprenticeship program or possession of a journeyman card in a related trade (plumbing, pipefitting structural steel (iron worker), boilermaker, millwright, boiler tender, steamfitter, or sprinkler fitter). Must be able to interpret and work from sketches, specifications, plans, and blueprints. Must be able to operate threading, cutting and reaming equipment; mechanical sewer cleaning equipment; oxy-acetylene cutting torch; and a welding machine. May be required to pass welding certification administered by The University of Alabama within six (6) months of hire date. Must be able to lift, handle and maneuver the tools, materials and supplies of the job. Must have the ability to use job-related tools and equipment and chemical supplies. Must be able to perform those items in the Job Summary and the essential functions.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.

Skills and Knowledge: Must be able to lift, handle and maneuver the tools, materials and supplies of the job. Must have the ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot blueprints, drawings, manuals, maps, schematics, and plans and do material takeoffs. Must have good people skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment and with a diverse population. Must have good communications skills, both written and verbal. Must be able to accomplish all assigned work tasks, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely matter. Must meet regular attendance requirements. Must have the ability to perform all tasks listed in the Job Duties section.

Preferred Qualifications: State of Alabama Journeyman Plumbers License or Alabama Master Plumbers License preferred. Welding experience preferred.
